Five Powerful Questions to Ask When Facing Unmet Expectations
March 8, 2018
One of the fascinating facts about life is that it's unpredictable. There are seasons of life that are awesome and then there are those that challenge our resolve. So what can we do to avoid negative thought loops when navigating disappointments? Here at Hackel Construction, we have found that asking the five following questions has power to shift beliefs and increase optimum energy in a matter of seconds.
1. Ask yourself, “What is great about this inconvenience?”
This question directs our focus toward what is possible. Is this circumstance a blessing in disguise, an opportunity to re-evaluate priorities, spend time with loved ones, or take a much needed time of rest? Brainstorm at least three ideal possibilities that can come from your circumstances and the benefits you will receive from them.
2. “What is not perfect yet?”
Like Tony Robbins says in his book, Awaken the Giant Within, asking this question implies that things will be perfect eventually. This belief enables one to let go of frustration and focus on solutions that unleash creativity. What we focus on expands so let this expansion be one of peace and empowerment! The more we focus on what is ideal, the more we will find the ideal becoming reality.
3. "What am I willing to do to make my circumstances the
way that I want them?"
This takes some thought and openness to viable options. Again consider three or four possible solutions that may work for your circumstances, consider resources that can help, and practice saying "no" to non-beneficial activities. Your brain intuitively has the answer for your challenge, and brainstorming opens the way for these solutions to become visible.
4. "What am I no longer willing to do to make my
circumstances the way that I want?"
Is there a habit or behavior you have adopted that is hindering your progress? If so, identify it, call it for what it is, and choose to stop enabling yourself or others.
5. Finally, ask, "How can I enjoy the process while I do what is necessary to make the situation the way that I want?"
Adventure is always waiting for those who look for it, so have fun with this one and utilize your sense of daring. When circumstances are not going according to plan, accept the challenge to look around and use your creativity to enjoy yourself regardless of the situation.
Life is fascinating because it is unpredictable and when facing unmet expectations, commit to focus on what you want to see. Ask these five powerful questions and brainstorm new alternatives to renew your energy, focus, happiness, and productivity.
"There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowledge."
